The book of Proverbs

They say Proverbs is a piece of wisdom literature, written by the wise man, Solomon.

And wise Solomon is wise, not because he read other wisdom literature, nor that he learnt from a great teacher, but because he knows God.

I present my favourite verse from Proverbs, 3

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him
And He shall direct your paths.
...
Trust and obey,
for there's no other way,
To be happy in Jesus
But to trust and obey.

I trust that I can do ALL things; I will soar on eagles' wings, I will be the head and not the tail, above and not beneath, through Christ who strengthens me.

Friends, if you happen to see this, do say a prayer for me (a silent prayer, or through a call, I'd really appreciate it).

That I will not be weary. I will be strengthened.
I will have His wisdom, and an open heaven above me.
Anointed. Blessed. Filled. Strengthened. Refreshed. Understanding.
That I will Trust and Obey.

Finally, I see hope in SA Art Students.
Something that veers from the usual navy-white-yellow.
And a near vintage/popart feel to this piece...

Call me a critic, or a sucker for detail (haha) but the tie is not and therefore, should not be striped navy and blue.
Where is the yellow...?

All is well, until the typography (which almost always disappoints)
Verdana (or its variations) on Print? WHY?... And squished at that...

But overall, better than last year's
or the previous years'... I see hope.
The light continues to shine.

Away from home.

A part of me wants to stay here.
Because it's comfortable.
Familiarity, subsidised education, friends, family.
So predictable, routinal, cyclical. So comfortable.

But another part of me wants to get out.
Even though the tuition fees are many times higher.
And many things uncertain.
Having to deal with insecurities, simply because fundamentally, I am an alien in foreign land.

But the prospects...
The relevant courses, and challenge that forces me to get out of my comfort zone...
I don't know if it's just me and my romanticised views about getting out of the country.
Nor do I know about the quality of education, or how it would affect my future and all the other what-ifs...

But experiencing another culture, and being exposed to a different place excites me.
I don't know how well it'd go but I definitely want to experience it.

---

What a difficult decision.
The Stay side says "All the things you're unhappy about this place, you've endured 18 years - so what's your issue now" but the Go side says "Go to the happy land, even if expectations fail, it's not forever... And when they live up to your expectations, you will be a happier man."

This battle between the 'Go' side of me and the 'Stay' side has been bugging me for a long long time. But I think I've made up my mind. but I don't know yet...

"No Studying"

Photobucket

This 'No Studying' policy at the above cafe confuses me, for a nong nong time.
Simply because studying in cafes is such a normal thing to do, although it can be irritating when people refuse to leave and planting themselves in the cafe for 24 hours, affecting business yadda yadda.

On the other hand, it is rather flattering that people choose to do that in your 'nice, little, cosy cafe' - isn't that a true testament of the level of comfort that they enjoy to stay there for such long hours just to enjoy the coffee and the comfort to do their work, no?

So I was at this place 'studying', because of that sign, I was very cautious and in the end, decided to type out some of my work and at the same time, do some photo editting while I waited for Mum.

As I was doing my thang, this barista/waitress (yes, they actually wait tables at this particular branch - moving furnitures for the customers... serving drinks if they are not collected... and waiting by the tables - to ensure that people leave once they are done, I guess?) came up to me and pointed this specially printed sign to me and explained the commandment to me.

I told her politely that I wasn't studying, I mean, I was only correcting colors and piecing up photos together and looking less than professional with it (NOT a true story, heh).

Her reply was really shocking - "Oh, we don't encourage our customers to do their work over here, because of the peak hour crowd that we are expecting."

I obliged. But I have to say that their supposed good service is not good enough. In fact, I find it amusing.
Firstly, they said they were "expecting" a "peak hour crowd".
Ok, today was an off-in-lieu -- so by right, it's peak hour every hour. And I was there at 5.30p.m. - by Comfort Cab's standards, it was already 30 minutes into peak hour...

The best part? There were many empty tables around me - I would say the cafe was 60% full only - orders were mainly for takeaway. And I suspect the reason is that the 'comfortable' spots were all taken up. Because the rest were very near the bar counter, where they prepare drinks. Oh, and peer at their customers.

Secondly, the fact that she pointed out the sign when I was not studying really pissed me off man. I mean you only printed "No Studying" but not "No Working", "No Doing Any Sort of Work Here"... I wouldn't mind if you asked me to leave if I was in actual fact, studying, doing my Ten Year Series with my GC or something. But I was NOT. I was on my Mac, minding my own business! In fact, I would say that I was leisurely entertaining myself on the computer!

But all is well... I didn't flare up or anything. Because I understand that they have a business to run and their coffee wasn't that good anyway, so that would have prevented me from making another purchase after I was done with my... drink? I packed up and left, thinking about how ridiculous it was.

Probably that cafe should consider the Long Run impacts of their 'No Studying' policy.
By now, many of us would have already know for a fact that customers no longer just look for a good cuppa in a coffee house. But rather, a package for maximum enjoyment of the experience. Coffee. Music. Friendly staff. Temperature of the airconditioning. Cushioned seats. You know, those things, and that is basically service in a nutshell, meeting the needs of the customer.

And now, my (which shall henceforth be referred to as The Customer's) need was to have some leisure time and do work without disturbance. And they have failed. The Customer's need was to have a good place to sit down and enjoy the place. But it was not met. So basically, the cafe did not fulfill its role, or rather, failed to fulfill its role of providing a service for The Customer.

Furthermore, they are losing their potential to be better, more famous, etc... Imagine the amount of free publicity should there be a budding writer sitting in there doing his/her 'work', but rejected by one of their staff. "Sorry, you have to leave although you are just minding your business, but by doing that you're affecting our business. Sorry."
Look at J.K. Rowling, she spent most of her writing time for the Harry Potter series in a cafe, and acknowledges it in her interviews. Why? Because they did not chase her away because she was taking up space, "obstructing" their business. And although, it has ceased to serve coffee, it has a commemorative plaque installed at its previous site for providing a service to Rowling.

I doubt this cafe will have a plaque for itself soon. Or maybe they can go make one for themselves with all the money earned by chasing customers away so that other people would come swiftly to take over the space - except they do not (only 60% full...)

And the plaque shall read "The famous people came, but we managed to chase them away... And they never came again."

Today I am puzzled. Bedazzled really.

I love ice cream. I especially love eating from the pint and my beloved 'now-in-the-States' Erica Kleinman posted something that would usually get me very excited.

Starbucks Ice Cream!

But what struck me was the price of the ice cream: US$3.00?!
"Oh maybe it was one of those mini-pints..." I thought but NO, eat your heart out, Robson Tan, It's US$3.00 for a whopping 473ml of ice cream! Coffee flavoured at that!

Then of course my thoughts went wild, "How much does a pint of Ben and Jerry's cost?"
But of course, after what seemed like 50-odd pictures later, it came full circle and hit me in my face...

WAH. And we've been paying $14.00 a pint over here?
And thinking we've got a good deal if some random supermarket sells it at $23.00 for two!
The huge price differences led me to google and then to this blog called "The Grand Moofti Speaks"

Based on August 19 exchange rates Singapore is by far one of the world's most expensive cities to indulge in a pint of quality ice cream.
1. Singapore: 10.28
2. Paris: 9.19
3. Bangkok: 8.76
4. Kuala Lumpur: 8.18
5. London: 6.60
6. New York: 3.32
(Source: Wall Street Journal, 'Arbitrage'. All prices quoted in USD.)

I hope now you have come to realise how expensive our country - small and open economy, which lacks natural resources and have to depend on imports from other countries to survive, really is. For hereon, the Index used to measure the cost of living in a city shall therefore be known as the Pint-of-BNJs Index.

Which is inherently flawed of course, but nonetheless, revelational.
PEACE. Let's go to New York and live off Ice Cream.
Pfft. No wonder Marshall can down pints of Cherry Garcia when he was angry.

So I was reading this extract from PopEntertainment.com's interview with Josh Radnor, of How I Met Your Mother fame. It sounds very very familiar. Personally, inspiring.

Of course; on the record then, I hope the show continues to do very well. I think it’s fantastic. So anyway, Josh, how did you first get involved in acting?

I just started doing musicals in high school. I got dragged down to… I was actually asked to sit in the audience with a friend of mine who was auditioning. My friend Debbie, she was very nervous to go down there. She said, “Just sit with me. Just sit with me.” I sat there and I watched everyone get up onstage and I thought, jeez, I think I can do better than this guy. (Laughs) So I ended up auditioning and I got one of the leads. I just never looked back. I kept doing it. All through college, I would go away every summer I was at a different theater. Then I went to NYU for grad school. I got out a few years ago and just kept doing it. I wasn’t discovered in the coffee shop. (chuckles) I just kept going.

Man! That audition part was exactly how it was for The Love of Three Oranges! Not like I think I will end up going around acting in theatres and end up in Broadway or anything. But really, a small step is what it takes to reach your destination in life, to fulfill that destiny.

But of course, it'd be nice if I do end up in NYU (or other Universities) doing something that I know I will enjoy doing for the rest of my life. Way to go everyone...

LAST 2 MONTHS.

The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)
We all know the story. If not, we've heard stories about it.
For me, many commented that the movie was "not as good as (they) expected" and was "boring at some parts" and hence, my own expectations wasn't great.
Any expectations, at all, are illusory anyway, as taught by Charles Dickens...

Ok, so I went to watch this movie alone.
You can say it was due to frustration, or that I was provoked, that I committed the rash act, but yeah, I went to the cinema alone at 9.40pm to catch this movie that I supposedly 'wouldn't like'. How weird...

I thought the show was gonna be a 'sleeper', the kind that lulls you to sleep after 1 hour because you're so tired, and you try so hard to keep your eyes open like you do during certain lectures...
But surprisingly, it wasn't anything like that at all.

Watching the show was a rather smooth one as it didn't require a lot of thinking, it didn't have a lot of outbursts of shouts, screams, timetravelling noises or 'BOOMS' and crash, and I was in the mood for this rather peaceful number. The dashes of sadness that lingered everytime the husband (Bana) 'time travelled' and the rather accurate portrayal of the wife (McAdams) makes this a rather good watch.

I am rather impressed by the actors. McAdams brought it home with her breadth of emotions in the second part of the movie. Especially spectacular (a memorable moment for me) was the scene when the husband informed her that he did "something that [she] wouldn't like" and the mixed emotions of overwhelming sadness, confused with rage and disappointment that she exhibited and with all that, she continued with her stuff. I really liked that.

Like I secretly wished I could act like that.

As I said, I was in the mood.
Moreover, I was alone - no popcorn, no distractions, just focusing on the movie...

What I didn't really like was the ending. It was okay, but a little too cheery for my liking.

It was a good experience all in all, I enjoyed that me-time and the movie... I'll probably start being increasingly anti-social because I rather enjoyed it... Haha

And here's ending off with a memorable quote,

CLARE: "I wouldn't change one second of our life together."
